“The Spirit-Led Life: Hearing the Voice of God.” Part 1

One of the most beautiful privileges of following Jesus is that we can hear His voice. Think about that for a moment the Creator of the universe desires to speak with us personally. Our faith isn’t built around rules or rituals, but a living relationship with a living God. That truth never stops being incredible to me.

When I first began my journey of faith, I thought hearing from God was something reserved for people far more qualified than me. I imagined He might speak to them in booming voices or through supernatural moments I could never relate to. But over time, I learned something beautiful: the Holy Spirit loves to speak to us in ways that feel personal and familiar. He knows how each of us listens best, and He meets us right there. How incredible is that?

For me, I usually hear Him as a gentle prompting in my heart or a thought that rises above the noise, something I know didn’t come from me. Peter, on the other hand, hears God most clearly through Scripture; the Word just lights up for him in a way that speaks straight to his spirit.

I’ve also had a few moments where God spoke through a very specific dream or even a simple vision. But most often, it’s a quiet thought about someone or a nudge to take action.

And that’s the beauty of it: the Holy Spirit knows your heart, your wiring, your way of processing life. He’ll speak to you in the way you hear best.

Designed for Connection

From the very beginning, humanity was designed for relationship with God. Adam and Eve walked with Him in the garden they didn’t just know about God; they knew Him. That same desire for relationship still beats in the heart of God today. The Holy Spirit was given so we could continue that divine conversation.

When Jesus told His disciples He was going away, they were heartbroken. But He promised, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16–17). That promise wasn’t just for the early church; it’s for us too.

The Holy Spirit isn’t a mystical force or an impersonal power. He’s the very presence of God living in us, teaching, comforting, convicting, and guiding us daily. That means hearing from Him isn’t optional; it’s essential to living the Christian life.

The Partnership of the Spirit

I often say, “God could do everything by Himself, but He chooses to do it through us.” That’s partnership and partnership requires communication. If you’ve ever worked alongside someone on a project, you know how important it is to stay connected. The same is true with God.

I remember before I experienced personal revival, when people would say things like, “God told me…” or “The Lord showed me…” I honestly thought they might be exaggerating or even making it up. I couldn’t imagine God speaking that clearly to someone. Looking back, it’s obvious, I wasn’t where I needed to be with Jesus, and I had no idea how deep and personal the relationship could actually be.

But everything changed when I started leaning in. When I slowed down, drew closer, and made space for Him, I began to recognize His voice. And it wasn’t dramatic or spooky; it was gentle, unmistakably loving, and often surprising. He spoke things to my heart I would never have told myself, truth, encouragement, correction, clarity. Sometimes He gave me insight about situations or people that I couldn’t have known on my own.

A couple of people even said, “Oh, you must be psychic.” But that’s not what hearing God is at all. It’s not fortune-telling or some mystical trick.

Hearing God is the fruit of intimacy, a living, breathing relationship with the God who loves us. He speaks to help us walk in fullness, wisdom, and freedom…and sometimes so we can help someone else have a beautiful encounter with Him too.

That’s what partnership looks like. The Holy Spirit speaks to us, we listen and do what He says and people’s lives are impacted forever.

Hearing vs. Recognizing

Sometimes people ask, “But how do I know if it’s really God speaking or just my own thoughts?” That’s such a common question, and I love how Jesus answers it in John 10:27: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

Notice hearing is not the issue; recognizing is. Every believer can hear God because His Spirit lives inside of us. The challenge is learning to discern His voice amid all the others our thoughts, fears, emotions, and the noise of the world.

Learning to recognize His voice is like learning to recognize someone’s voice over the phone. The more time you spend with them, the quicker you know it’s them. It’s not instant; it’s relational.

There were times early in ministry when I second-guessed everything. Was that God or me? Did I make that up? But the Holy Spirit is patient. He doesn’t condemn us when we miss it He trains us. Over time, I began to notice patterns: His voice was always marked by peace, never panic. It carried love, never pressure. It brought clarity, not confusion.

A Life Ruled by the Spirit

Romans 8:14 says, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” Being led means allowing Him to guide every part of life not just the spiritual moments, but the ordinary ones too.

I’ve heard His whisper while standing in the kitchen, prompting me to call someone I haven’t spoken to in ages or to go visit someone in the hospital. I’ve sensed His peace guiding major life transitions like when Peter and I moved overseas for missions work. Every big “yes” we’ve ever given started with a small whisper from the Holy Spirit.

And I’ve learned this truth: if you can hear Him in the small things, you’ll be ready to trust Him in the big ones. The more you hear and respond to His voice, the more you hear and respond.

Awareness Changes Everything

Living a Spirit-led life isn’t about striving to hear more; it’s about becoming more aware. God is always speaking, but we have to quiet the noise long enough to notice. That’s why moments of stillness, worship, and prayer are so powerful they tune our hearts back to His frequency.

When you start living with that awareness, everything shifts. Ordinary moments become sacred. Interruptions become opportunities. Decisions become divine invitations.

So let me ask you: when was the last time you paused and simply asked, “Holy Spirit, what are You saying right now?”

He’s not hiding from you. He’s not waiting for you to be perfect or spiritually elite. He’s waiting for you to listen.

And once you begin to hear His voice, you’ll never want to live any other way.

Reflection for the Week:
Take a few quiet moments today and ask the Holy Spirit to help you hear Him speak. Don’t overthink it, just listen. Put your phone away in another room, turn off the TV, and sit alone in silence. Open the Word. Read and listen. His voice might come as a thought, a scripture, or a sense of peace. Write it down. The more you acknowledge His voice, the clearer it will become.

To be continued.
