When Hunger Meets His Presence

This is the story of a night under a simple white tent in Sri Lanka where expectations were shattered – not by production, but by hunger. A room full of students cried out for God with such longing that Heaven responded in a way that no sermon could have orchestrated. What I thought would be a message became a revelation: when hearts are hungry, God always comes.

The Invitation and the Unexpected Moment

During our time in South East Asia, I was invited to speak at a youth event in Sri Lanka. I remember feeling both excited and curious. I wondered what the atmosphere would be like, imagining their beautiful faces, vibrant worship, and hearts ready to receive. And yes, I expected the Holy Spirit to move powerfully. He did, of course. But not in the way I anticipated.

The journey there was uneventful except for the one moment where our driver nearly collided head-on with another car. Instinctively, from somewhere deep within, I shouted, “I love You, Jesus!” at the top of my lungs.

When we came to a safe stop, the other passengers looked at me, wide-eyed, and asked, “Why did you say that?” I shrugged and said, “Well… if anyone survived… I just wanted it on record that He was my last thought.”

Yes. I plan ahead even for dramatic finale moments.

A Tent Full of Heat and Hunger

The youth conference was held under a large white tent. Simple and open-air. Plastic chairs filled quickly and the warm air rose just as fast. I sat on the front row with the leaders and two translators. Sinhala and Tamil were the main languages spoken, so preaching required two translators meaning every message took three times as long. The students didn’t seem to notice or care.

But what marked me that night had nothing to do with my message.

It was God Himself.

When Worship Turns into Hunger

Worship began, and though I didn’t understand the language, I lifted my own song to the Lord. Within moments, I realized something powerful was happening.

The hunger in the room was palpable.

These students were not just singing they were reaching. Leaning. Longing. Pouring themselves toward the presence of God.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6

They came hungry and Heaven responded.

The Moment Heaven Stepped In

Then something remarkable happened.

The musicians stopped playing.

But the students didn’t stop singing.

Their voices only grew louder. Stronger. Deeper. It was as if their very souls were singing beyond the capacity of their lungs. Their worship rose and fell like ocean tides.

And then He came.

Not in a whisper.
Not in a polite stillness.
But in weight. Presence. Glory.

“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” Psalm 42:2

His presence rolled into the tent in tangible, rhythmic waves. When His presence rose, their voices rose. When His presence softened, their voices softened.

No worship leader was leading them.

God was.

This continued for nearly twenty minutes – pure, unprompted, unmanufactured adoration.

I turned around and immediately began to weep.

Hundreds of young people were lost in the presence of God.
Eyes closed.
Hands lifted.
Faces wet with tears.
Some kneeling.
Some standing.
Some swaying like wheat in the wind.

Every heart fixed.
Every voice full.
Every soul reaching.

The Revelation: Hunger Is the Doorway

In that holy moment, I realized again something I will never forget:

Hunger is the doorway to encounter.

Not talent.
Not production.
Not flawless sermons.
Not beautiful music.

Just hunger.

“O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You;
my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1

Hunger pursues Him and He never denies Himself to the hungry.

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…” Isaiah 55:1

I Came to Minister But God Ministered to Me

I went to Sri Lanka to minister to young people.

But instead God ministered to me.

Because hunger draws Him.
And when hunger fills a room…

He always comes.
